| Filthy water cannot be washed. ~ African Proverb Notes from the Field By Nereah Obura, P4P Kenya Program Coordinator Dear P4P Friend, We have received much rain in the last two months, but sadly, most of it goes to waste. Families have no way to harvest and save water, and many gallons are lost through surface runoff. Now when you walk around the villages, there are muddy streams and puddles everywhere but no way to collect and sanitize the water. |
| | Barely two months from now when the dry season sets in, women and girls will have to walk several kilometers looking for water, sometimes leaving home as early as 4:00 am. |
| | Due to such acute water shortages in the area, P4P has seen to it that schools in the area cost share on 10,000-liter water storage tanks. This enables the students to access clean drinking water while in school. One such school is the Ogada Girls Secondary School with an enrollment of 218 girls. Some are boarding students, so having adequate water is critical. So far, P4P has helped deliver three 10,000-liter tanks to this school. |
| | "This has reduced the number of days that the girls have to go outside to fetch water,” says Mrs. Ochieng, the school principal. “The girls are safer remaining at the school most of the day and do not have to take time away from studying to fetch water.” “In providing us with the water tanks, P4P helps us protect the girls from situations that may lead to sexual and gender-based violence,” the Ogada Girls Secondary School guidance and counseling teacher adds. |

| | Join Us in Welcoming P4P’s New Development Coordinator Peggy Gallinger retired once upon a time, but she recently declared "I'm not done giving back." With that, she applied for and was offered the position of P4P’s part time development coordinator. Peggy has worked in the technology industry as well as directing development for Second Harvest Food Bank. You will begin to see her name on communications, and you may even receive a phone call as she gets to know our P4P friends. Welcome to the P4P team, Peggy! |
